Forging ahead despite strong opposition

(25th October 2006)

The company that plans to build a NASCAR track on Staten Island, International Speedway Corporation (ISC) is adamant in building a NASCAR track on Staten Island despite strong opposition to their plans. Over the years, ISC have been receiving warm, cold, chilly, and hot reception to their plans. Their plans and various strategies regarding the Staten Island NASCAR track have elicited mixed responses from the residents of Staten Island .

One of the many concerns that residents have about the Staten Island NASCAR track is that it would heighten the traffic problems that Staten Island is already facing. They feel that they don't need a NASCAR track to make traffic conditions even worse for them during race days.

Michael Printup, the manager of the NASCAR track says that despite the opposition to their plans, they are committed to the plan and will continue to forge ahead with their plans. They will look at everything from every single angle to help eliminate the fears that the opposition has. Printup says that the company is looking into everything and will leave no stone unturned. From the race plans, to the site plans, from the design of the NASCAR site to the race times….everything will be evaluated and reevaluated to make the Staten Island NASCAR track a reality. In his words, Printup says that ISC has thrown everything back into the basket and shaken everything up. So, they're basically starting everything all over again.

Apparently, the revised plan will reduce the number of cars allowed into Staten Island during race days and this revised plan will be submitted to the New York City officials by end of the year. Instead of relying on parking on the site of the NASCAR track, the new plan say that NASCAR fans would have to rely mainly on ferries and buses to get to the NASCAR track. This is their plan to help eliminate the fears of the islanders.

Despite doing everything they can do revise the plan to reduce the worries of the islanders and the officials, it doesn't seem to be good enough because the officials remain united in opposing the plan.

In his words, City Councilman Michael McMahon says that there's nothing ISC can do or say to change their position. He further went on to advice ISC about changing their location.

Looks like a stalemate.
