Sticking together for NASCAR track on Staten Island
November 5th, 2006
The Staten Island NASCAR track has been controversial right from the start. Ever since International Speedway Corporation revealed their plans to build a NASCAR track on an unused site on Staten Island , the residents have been rattled. A forum ended up in a near-fight as police had to help calm down high-strung residents. There are those who oppose the track saying that having a NASCAR track on Staten Island would only serve one purpose – to make traffic woes even worse than it is now. And according to some of the residents who strongly oppose the track, they don't need help in making traffic any more congested than it already is.
Even the Staten Island politicians are using this NASCAR track as weapons to eliminate their competitors. They use the NASCAR track to rally support from those who are against the track and is for the track. However, at this point in time, most of the politicians are against the track while those who are FOR the track lacks a voice. So, for fans of NASCAR, it's really quite tough.
But this is why the islanders must stick together and form a united front to see this NASCAR track through. To them, Staten Island is now being given the chance to have their very own NASCAR track, waterfront retail and hopes of having their traffic problems eased. The NASCAR track is more than just a track to them. They believe that when International Speedway Corporation manages to untie themselves from the red tape knot that they are in (they had two of their permits revoked earlier last month), they will bring in large amounts of cash to help improve the traffic here.
And this is where SINCH comes in. SINCH stands for Staten Island NasCar Hopefuls. SINCH is not corporate nor is congressional in nature; their main purpose is to serve as a community or group of people where citizens can organize and stick together in sharing their ideas and dreams in supporting the Staten Island NASCAR track.
SINCH is holding a race party this 19 th November 2006 (Sunday) at Moose Family Center at 217 Nicholas Avenue (by Port Richmond HS), so, for those interested in the party, check out http://www.si4nascar.com for more info.
