What is so wrong with using an unused piece of land for the Nascar Track? Steve Gumble

by Steve Gumble

I don't understand why so many people are opposing the Staten Island Nascar Track. It seems like a pretty good idea to me. After all, the piece of land where the Nascar Track is supposed to be built on, The Bloomingdale Site, is bound to be used for one thing or another anyway, therefore, it's hard for me to comprehend what all this fuss is all about. It's either going to be a mall, a cinema, a block of offices…whatever…something's going to be built there and irregardless, the traffic's going to be bad, anyway. So, what's the hoopla about the Staten Island Nascar Track. Why the strong opposition from leaders and politicians? Is there something I don't see? Is it a political issue…or maybe it's a financial issue?

The way I see it, that piece of land is going to be developed anyway, Nascar or otherwise. Let's think for a minute here…can a housing estate bring in as much revenue as a Nascar Track – and let's take into account the number of times big-time races are going to be held there. I don't think there's any question about that one. Is the traffic going to be any better if there was a mall built on that currently vacant piece of land? Traffic is already bad there and with the growth of the Bloomingdale area, the way I see it, the traffic's going to be even worse…with or without the Nascar Track there. so…once again…what's the fuss all about?

Everyone knows that the Nascar is coming and anyone worth his own smarts would know that the money is there. There's no denying it. Smart business people are already counting their dollars, investing in businesses surrounding the place, opening up shops and complexes within the area hoping to cash in on the new Staten Island Nascar Track.

But International Speedway Corporation would need to consider the negative environmental impact that the Nascar Track would have on the people living surrounding the wetlands. With that issue solved, I would think International Speedway Corporation should be left alone and let them get ahead with their plans anyway.

Unless…of course, this is a political thing. Is it?
